The last 3 months…

…has continued to be a period of transition for Arun Community Transport. The level of requests to register, or use the service, has increased dramatically in the last few months. Some of this can be attributed to the changes in the Hospital Transport service which has been handed over to EMED.

To put you in the picture...

As a community transport service, Arun Community Transport currently has more than 1,000 users in the service. With over 150 weekly trips made by its members. Arun Community Transport provide a vital lifeline to many of the elderly, vulnerable, disabled people, rural residents and deprived households in the community.

The need to plan and organise these trips is a major task and essential to maintaining a smooth-running service. Many of the trips are for medical appointments and are subject to changes at short notice. Currently we are experiencing a level of 17% of cancelled and re-arranged appointments. Progress by way of discussions with the local NHS Trust has helped to reduce this and will be ongoing in the future.

As new systems are being developed...

We have recruited new volunteer drivers and office staff, and although others have retired the overall number of volunteers has increased. This will open up more capacity to operate our services. Our volunteer drivers provide an outstanding service to our local communities. We are looking to make improvements in communication between our office and driver volunteers. This will avoid the need for last minute re-scheduling.

A day in the life of a volunteer:

‘I have been volunteering for Arun Community Transport

for a month. The team welcomed me and showed me

the basics of the software we use and eventually I was

given more responsibilities, at first, I worked with our

office team to help go through answerphone messages

on top of answering the phone itself which helped me

get familiar with my space and explore what the

software can do.

I also had to manage the bookings requested by clients

which included cancelling and rescheduling trips on top

of booking new ones all the while keeping both

volunteers and drivers informed of any changes, I also work alongside other office staff to ensure that everyone knows who is handling what task and streamline our efforts to handle as many clients as we can. Thanks to our new manager, I was also able to help update our social media page and offer advice on our advertisements, I have also helped reformat paperwork like membership forms and receipts and have been given the responsibility of receiving payments from our members.

All in all, this office volunteering position has offered me heaps of experience in office work alongside an opportunity to help the community in West Sussex.  I have gained a lot of experience in customer service since you must be professional and try your hardest to assist our clients, as we provide transportation for medical appointments.

It’s a great opportunity for people looking for administrative or clerical experience.'
